A reader-friendly short little book that gives simple, clear and practical advice for all forms of business writings like letters, e-mails, reports, etc.

The book consists of simply two parts with the introductory chapter/part presenting creative insights for organizing your message. And the second part showing countless perfect phrases for different occasions.

“Perhaps you find that the most difficult first step in writing is not giving birth to the first sentence but garnering the necessary discipline to sit down and commit yourself to the blank screen. You avoid as long as you can: You think of other things you need to do and pretend that they are more important, you go get another cup of coffee, you stick your head in a friend’s office and chat, or you clean your desk and promise to get to the writing task tomorrow. …”

Family businesses epitomize the best of the American Dream: you work hard, you’re your own boss, you leave a lasting legacy to your children — or do you? Statistics show that only 30% of family businesses survive to the second generation, and a paltry 10% survive to the third generation. Family businesses are in trouble, and their survival is crucial to us all. Their success ensures our country’s success — and their failure can drastically affect our economic he… More >>

Keep the Family Baggage Out of the Family Business: Avoiding the Seven Deadly Sins That Destroy Family Businesses

Depending upon the health of your family (and family business) most of this book does not really apply. The author also openly states that. However, he does say that it only takes one of the “7 sins” to take down a family business and it does allow for some forewarning of things that should be avoided.

He does cover a lot of ground, including immigrant businesses, a good section on succession of the business, and touches on both small and large family businesses.

I found quite a bit of it to also be his sales pitch, implying that every family business should hire, in the foreground or background, a consultant, a lawyer, an accountant, and possibly a therapist =D

Overall, it’s an okay book covering topics which hopefully most people are aware of and warning you about things you may not be. If you are facing problems, this book may help you either diagnose it yourself or he suggests things to look for in an outsider to help you diagnose it.

      Good luck!

The author holds nothing back and tells it like it is to work in a family business. It is extremely difficult and takes hard work and keeping a lot of what you are thinking to yourself. Good book – would recommend anyone reading it before they are getting into a family business or if you are already working for the family and need comfort that you are not alone. This book is a “healthy” reflection of time bombs unique to a family business. As a coach to family businesses, I can’t stress enough that what can go wrong will go wrong at the time least expected.

The book’s title is somewhat a turn off – in my opinion, these are not sins, but human nature at work – something most people are aware of, but avoid to address – and hope they will magically resolve themselves and go away. Further, there could also be a lack of knowing how to avoid them – or they simply do not apply.

However, I highly recommend the book based on it’s content and for the topics covered. It is an easy read, and bargain investment, to figure out if your family business has committed, or is on the road to committing, one or several of the “seven sins”.

I wish I’d had this book years ago! My husband’s family business was recently in bankruptcy and was bought out by another company. They committed practically all of these “deadly sins”. The information is practical, appliable, and very real life advice. Heed his warnings!

This book, in a very neutral way, captures where families can go wrong, in the family business. Must read for all generations, both in and out of the business. Even if things are going great right now, read this book!

I am very close to selecting this text for a seven unit course. The abridged version is not the one I need. It is extremely difficult to tell that the book being offered here is not the standard 1300+ page edition, and worse, the price seems to be for the more comprehensive version. I need to make sure that my students do not bring the abridged version to class. Further, the current edition is the Second Edition, and things have changed.

Hey, beware if you buy this that you will spend countless hours in the library copying all the missing cases! The seller says its obvious that they are selling the abridged version but its not—and they will not issue a refund!

This book offers the most comprehensive, accurate, and realistic coverage on the topic I’ve seen in any one book. What sets it apart is it gives new and aspiring entrepreneurs what they’re starving for: detailed, step-by-step advice on how to turn an idea into an online business – with NO hype or empty ‘get rich quick’ promises. Encouraging, informative and filled with helpful examples, this is the book that will finally guide small business owners past the roadblocks that stop most people from successfully selling products, services, and information on the web.

If you’re going to begin a new venture, you want to follow detailed advice from someone who has successfully started an online venture. Steve Slaunwhite is that person. As he writes inside the cover, “I built that website (his first website) into a six-figure money maker for me, and helped dozens of other entrepreneurs do the same.”

Whether you have never launched a website or already have a foot in the web-based world, you need this book. It contains hundreds of time-tested tips and insight which will save you hours of experimentation (read wasted time) and put your business on the right course for success. As Slaunwhite writes in the introduction, “I’ve also included hundreds of recommended websites, online tools, products, services, and other resources.”

I read this book cover to cover and plan to read it a second time (yes, it’s that worthwhile). “The information is all hear. The next move is yours.”

Get this book, read it carefully (and repeatedly), take action on the advice and wear out the pages. You will be glad you did.

This is a practical and informative introduction to the world of web-based business. The few other books I have read on the subject were filled with a pie-in-the-sky-get-rich-quick orientation and this has none of that. Just a realistic examination of the subjects that you need to address to get a web-based business off the ground.

The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Starting a Web-Based Business book is such an informative and useful book the only thing that seems to be missing are all the get rich quick gimmicks that fill so many business books. While the author, Steve Slaunwhite, does give examples of successful internet based businesses, he doesn’t make any outrageous claims about getting rich overnight.

What he does do is give the reader a basic understanding of the different types of Web-Based businesses and how to increase your chances of success by using more effective strategies. The author discusses everything from selling a physical product online (even offering a list of wholesalers) to affiliate programs to the more technical aspects such as picking an appropriate domain name and building and managing the web site.

Once the fundamentals are covered, Slaunwhite offers guidance on important issues such as increasing traffic and converting visitors to the web site into customers. What like about The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Starting a Web-Based Business is that it provides a solid foundation of basic knowledge. It stays focused on the most useful information and doesn’t get bogged down in the kind of tedious irrelevant details that makes me feel like I am slipping into a coma halfway through the first chapter. The book also offers guidance on how to avoid potentially costly mistakes, so even if you don’t become and internet millionaire, at least you can maximize the profits you do make.

This book offers real, practical advice for those trying to start up an Internet based business, unlike so many other “resources” that are just a way to sell you on some product or another. The advice makes sense and can actually be implemented in the real world and the language is not too technical for the beginner. A greta buy for anyone interested in starting a business online
