      The holder is not good.

It does not fit with the navigator perfectly.

The holding mechanism is not also good.

It is desirable to change the holding mechanism.

      Thanks

Now that I have the Garmin working, it has been very helpful. I use it a lot. However, Garmin tech support is not helpful. I had to call tech support 3 times, and each time I had to wait over 20 minutes for help. The last time I called, I waited 20+ minutes to talk with someone, and then he insisted on transferring me because I had a MAC. After the transfer, a recorded voice told me there was a 30-40 minute wait, and I hung up in frustration. I’m glad that’s over with.

This is a good product save for the fact that sometimes it does not take the fastes route. You will get to where you need to be but sometimes it is not as fast as it should be.

The Garmin 260 is no longer manufactured by Garmin. It is still a great unit. They upgraded the maps to current 2010 maps at no cost . I have never had a problem with Garmin GPS units. You can’t go wrong with easy to use Garmin GPS units.

My wife has been pestering me for months to replace my PDA-based GPS kluge (with the mechanized, unintelligibly-synthesized voice) with something more modern and socially acceptable. I proudly presented to her this latest toy to fulfill her wish. Although more than I thought I should pay for such a ubiquitous device, the high-rating and cheaper “refurbished” version made it an acceptable expenditure. It has certainly lived up to the expected reputation for ease of use and accuracy. So far, I have found every location quickly. On occasion it does seem to route me through a distant U-turn where a preceding left would obviously have sufficed but it always gets me there. The Points of Interest library is the one feature that has transformed me from a lost loser to a trail-blazing hero. I can always find the bank, shopping mall or grocery store, which my persnickety wife craves on a whim. Not only does it boost my confidence and makes my thinning hair seem inexplicably more verile but supports the theory that the memory of this device has the most current data available.

There are two drawbacks, which, fortunately as the operator, only I am aware of. First, the unit takes about half a minute to first acquire satellite synchronization, not so significant. The second is more egregious: the screen-based, touch-sensitive keyboard meant for data entry is laid out in alphabetical order instead of QWERTY fashion like the typewriters or computers that have been used for this purpose since the time of Hadrian. Even a Dvorak layout would have been preferable to this abomination. I know I shouldn’t but now typing while driving is even thrice as dangerous!

However, the interface otherwise is very intuitive and the unit covers all basic settings and features that I have seen and expect. As GPS units go this is the best value I could find. A definite improvement over asking directions, perish the thought!

If you’re after a paperweight, buy this unit. I have yet to have it direct me to within 3 miles of my destination. There is no way (or it’s a secret) to convince it to go a different route than what it suggests (demands would be a better word) and the suction cup mount does not work well – at least on windshields.

We’ve had this unit for several months now and it has been very close to being chucked out the window every time it’s been used. Perhaps the maps are better for China where this thing was made.

Buy something else, you’ll be glad you did!

The Navigation unit is fine when you can get the window mount to stay attached to the TomTom. Unfortunately, this isn’t very often.

There’s a ring on the back of the 530S that attaches to the window mount. I spent 20 minutes trying to get it to reattach with no luck and returned the unit.

As far as the 530S goes with its navigation, I didn’t like the routes chosen. They were often slower than other routes using a paper map routing.

I’d stay away from this unit.

The TomTom 530s is a deceptively dumb super high tech GPS. Once it sets a course its that way only no matter what, unless you force it to select an alternate route. So, if you are driving in dense traffic and notice a traffic standstill ahead and you turn off to take an alternate route, to get GPS help you have to tap the screen to get back to the main menu to select the alternate route and then confirm the alternate selection before it will display anything useful. I’m accustomed to the auto recalculation provided by Garmin and Magellan, so despite its 5″ screen, the usefulness of the technology is inconvenient in circumstances where you least want to pay attention to programming the unit. After using this product several days, I’m returning it to the seller and buying out a Magellan 1700 (7″ display) instead.

I like the unit, it has helped me find my way around Houston after arriving in the USA. What I do not like, actually detest, is the mount! You stick it on the windscreen and then rotate it around to see it and “boom” it is on the floor of the car. The rotating support is held on by three springs which cannot hold the unit when you start to rotate it on the windscreen. Good unit let down by a stupid design.

This may work well for those on the dark side, but what the documentation doesn’t tell you, unless you dig for it, is that the DVD and CD that come with it are only compatible with Windows computers. It used to be that Windows people were proud of the products they support, but if a manufacturer won’t even tell the consumer that their products are OS limited, well, you get the picture. Stay away from this.

I stopped into a pawn shop with my mother with no intension of buying a GPS unit, but I do love to browse and had been ‘ off and on ‘ checking out GPS units.

Quite honestly I had never read any reviews, I had never checked into whether any of them were any good or not. With technology now days you never can tell. You simply have to try and keep up with it all. Eiter this or just ‘ go with a gut feeling ‘.

Anyway, I seen the GPS unit and walked out of the Pawn Shop with it. I’ve read all or most of the reviews here about the NAV 740 and well, was hoping I would fall into any of the ‘ problem categories ‘. I just read one review, what was the name? David I believe. Great review with great detail and very well written. My grammer stinks somtimes. Ha ha.

Ok, back to the point or points. I have had no trouble with the battery. I’ve used the unit for almost or maybe longer than an hour after a complete charge and it’s still going strong. ( It looked new when I bought it, but after browsing History and what not I could see that the unit had been used; never the less. Which is a good thing perhaps. Maybe whoever had the unit before just didn’t need that type of unit or needed other functions.) Ok, i have not had any problems with browsing from one screen to another; even though sometimes or on some options it ask ‘ do you want to _____? And when i click ‘ Yes ‘ it won’t do anything. Perhaps only a mess up on my own part.

      Ok, I’m taking a breath …

Let’s see, battery good; check, switching from screen to screen; check, …

The Satelite hooks up pretty quick. I mean, not instantly, but within a few minutes and your good to go. And not to mention it does a really good job of ‘ finding you ‘ or ‘ where YOU are. Within just a few feet every time for me. Which from my experience with GPS units this thing is doing a very nice job of it.

I finally had the chance to actually drive with this unit this morning. I was going to check it out for the fun of it and am tickled how well it worked. I was a bit skiddish like I said, after reading some of the reviews. But, there was no need for my breaking or ‘ turning around ‘. The unit found me, kept up with me ( the Arrow >>> went with me in complete accuracy ). No problems there. In fact it told me something like 3 times before I came to the next turn that I needed to turn > and this is how it works. Turn left on so and so Hwy, .8 miles ahead > then it would narrow it down to ‘ turn left at the next street ‘. WElllll, I missed my turn. Wasn’t use to the area and blinked, plus had someone behind me which added to the pressure. BUT, IT WORKS … very well if you ask me.

ok, let’s see … as for the lack of ‘ Maps ‘ in the V7 units … I don’t know. the 740 seems to be very extensive in map knowledge. At least I have ran into any problems there. I’ve looked a few things up. And was actually happy the GPS found me this morning and told me what road I was on.

Well, I honestly don’t know what else to add. Yes, with any bit of ‘ new ‘ technology or ‘ change ‘ from anything you are use to. They can all be a pain sometimes.

Over all though. This unit rocks …

      5 stars … God Bless

Oh yeh, well, my car sits low to the ground anyway, which adds to ‘ noise ‘ and not to mention I just had the unit sitting in my lap so, I could here what the lady was telling me. I’d have to grab the unit and hold it close to my ear in order to hear. Ah, had the window cracked to. I’m a ‘ bad, bad smoker ‘eh ‘. Anyway, it’s very audible, clear, easy to hear and to understand. Even with having to grab the unit up I could make out what she was telling me.

Ok, I’m done. Hope this was all helpful. I was really weary of this unit at first, but quite honestly I don’t see any problems with it.

I bought this because it says that it can handle up to 16gb of sd card. So I plugged my 8gb card into it with the map files copied over to it and my music.

The music interface is terrible. It has no shuffle option and there’s no way to listen to music as you’re navigating. I think it defeats the purpose of having mp3 possibilities because I wanted it to pause the music to give me directions. I heard that many other gps systems have that option, but not this one.

It runs on Windows CE, so I’m going to try to replace their crap software with better ones.
